WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR PAIN FREE DENTISTRY?

There are 3 main types of sedation available to patients at a dentist’s office. The dentist will typically use a type of sedation that is appropriate for your dental treatment. If you have any questions about the type of sedation, ask your dentist.

  1. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe and effective option for many people who need some form of dental sedation. It’s also known as “happy gas” because it makes people feel calm and relaxed. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that fits over your nose and mouth, which you breathe in deeply for about 5 minutes before the procedure begins. This form of pain numbing has no long-term effects and normally you can drive yourself home after your dental procedure. Dr. Rowen is a cosmetic dentist who uses nitrous oxide (laughing gas) in his practice.
  1. Lidocaine – Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that numbs the area of your mouth or throat where it’s placed. It can be applied as a liquid or gel directly to your gum tissue on your gums, inside your cheek, on your tongue, or inside your throat. Lidocaine is an option for patients who are not comfortable with IV sedation or oral sedatives. Lidocaine has been used since 1943 to make dental care more comfortable and less stressful.
  1. IV Sedation – This form of dental anesthesia  is administered through an intravenous line in a vein, usually in the arm or hand, and it is often combined with nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas). IV Sedation is usually reserved for adults who need extensive dental work done that lasts over one hour. Dr. Rowen does not utilize IV sedation in his practice.
