Teeth Grinding / Bruxism

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a condition, where you grind, clench, or grate your teeth. You may not even realize that you are clenching or grinding our teeth during the day or night. Bruxism can be mild and may not require any treatment, however if it is frequent or serve it could cause jaw disorders, headaches, or damage your teeth.

What are the systems of Bruxism?

  • Worn down teeth
  • Flattened teeth
  • Fractured teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Worn teeth enamel
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw pain
  • Tightness in your jaw muscles
  • Tired jaw muscles
  • Earaches
  • Headaches
  • Chronic facial pain
  • Chewing on the inside of your cheek
  • Indentations on your tongue

Why do I have Bruxism / How do I get Bruxism?

Doctors do not completely understand what causes Bruxism, however, there are possible causes. Possible causes are:

* Anxiety                             * Stress

* Tension                             * Hyperactive personality type

* Abnormal alignment            * Sleep problems

How do you treat Bruxism?

There are therapies that can be done to help treat Bruxism. The dentist can provide a mouth guard or a protective dental appliance to prevent any damage to your teeth. Another possible therapy is to correct any teeth that are misaligned.   Make sure to have regular checkups with your dentist.

Some ways to help are to reduce stress in your life by listening to music or exercise, or even take a bath. If you have a sleep partner, ask him or her to let you know if you are making any clicking sounds or grinding your teeth at night.
