Root Canal in your future? If the root in one of your teeth became diseased in the days before Endodontics, you'd likely have to have it pulled. Modern dentistry has developed a dental procedure called root canal therapy. This specialization is called Endodontics, and Endodontics specialists are known as Endodontists.
At Rowen Dentistry we "cater to cowards".
You won't feel any discomfort during the root canal procedure.
We offer nitrous oxide sedation for all root canal procedures.
Inside of every tooth is "pulp", which is soft tissue containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Pulp is found in a root canal that runs through the center of the "dentin", the hard tissue on the inside of the tooth. If pulp becomes diseased, the pulp tissue can die. If it isn't removed, the tooth will also become infected and it could be lost. Pulp extends from the pulp chamber down the root canal to the tip of the root in the jawbone. If the pulp dies, an abscess can form at the tip of the root and can affect the jawbone. Abscesses can cause damage to the bone around the teeth.
Root canals generally require more than one appointment. The tooth is drilled and the pulp is removed first, with antibiotics being used to stem infection, if warranted. After cleaning of the root canal and sealing for protection, a temporary filling is put in place to keep out contamination until a permanent crown can be properly fitted. If needed, a metal or plastic rod can be installed into the root canal to provide structural strengthening for the crown. |
